Darwin is not for the weak as our friend would say. Hot and humid during ‘wet season’ we experienced some pretty warm days around here but the city has plenty of chilled out places to relax and cool down.
We spent 4 days in Darwin and surrounds and had some great experiences in this little town. Laid back and with plenty to see and do, you’ll be surprised at how much can happen at the Top End of the country.
Check out our favourite spots in Darwin and around!
- Litchfield National Park
Litchfield is the closest National Park around Darwin and it’s definitely worth a visit. With several swimming spots to choose from, find your favourite and even go camping if you feel adventurous. Be aware that on ‘wet’ season, most swimming areas will be closed because of the risk of crocodile appearances. Apart from that, enjoy the views and breathtaking scenery this place has to offer. - Mindil Sunset Markets
A must go spot to visit while in Darwin is the Mindil Beach where every twilight, the sun sets in a majestic spectacle by the beache. After the sunset, head to the Markets where you can get a great variety of food and local crafts and enjoy local music.
- Museums & Art Galleries
Darwin is packed with history from the WWII since it was the city with the single largest attack on Australia. The Museum & Art Gallery (free of charge) and the Darwin Military Museum (AU$18) are the main ones in town and should definitely be checked out. - East Point Reserve
If you head to the Darwin Military Museum, stop by at East Point Reserve afterwards. You can chill out and relax under the trees or go for a quick swim at the lake. Perfect spot for a picnic with a charming view.
- Darwin Waterfront
Darwin Waterfront is a modern complex with several restaurants and services that offer entertainment and good food for the whole day. If you want to go for a swim, head to the beach or enjoy the cool waves at the Wave Pool (AU$7). Spend the whole day relaxing and soaking the sun.
