10 Things to Do in Efate, Vanuatu

October 14, 2016

Vanuatu is a little piece of paradise that is unknown to most of the world. Neighbouring countries like Fiji, Phillipines and New Caledonia usually get all the credit. But hey, we are not complaining. We love being able to go around an almost-free-from-turists island.

There’s plenty to see and do in this archipelago of 82 islands. An indulging ocean with warm waters and colourful corals to explore and white sand beaches with turquoise like ocean.

Check our favourite 10 things to do on the island of Efate, Vanuatu.

  1. Visit the Mele Cascades
Mele Cascades are located about 15 minutes drive from town and there’s usually a tour that can take you up there. Arriving at the gate, you’ll have to pay about AU$15 and you can spend the afternoon hiking to get to the top of the main cascades. On the way up, stop and relax by the many pool of pristine cold waters. When you reach the top cascade, dive in and enjoy the fairy like views.

  2. Dive the Clear Blue Waters
Vanuatu is known by its clear and warm waters. A true feast to the eyes. The main island offers plenty of options for divers, with dives from reef to wreck. If you are interested in taking your diving certificates, we highly recommend the guys over at Big Blue. The crew is incredibly professional and extremely helpful throughout the whole training. The views underwater are fantastic and definitely worth it!
  3. Relax under the Coconut Trees at Erakor Island
Erakor Island is another one of the resort islands around Efate. With a cheap ferry ride, you receive the boat fare as money to use in the restaurant/bar and you can spend the whole day just chilling by the beach. Just watch for falling coconuts.

  4. Send an Underwater Postcard at Hideaway Island
To get to Hideaway Island take the boat from Devils Point and spend the day snorkeling, diving or simply relaxing by the beach. The resort offers good food and fancy cocktails and local beer. If you want to make your trip to Hideaway Island remarkable, buy a postcard and send it through the underwater post office. It’s the perfect souvenir!
  5. Watch the Fire Show at the Beach Bar
When you come back from Hideway Island, stop at the Beach Bar right in front of the pier where you jump off the boat. Book a table in advance as the evening shows are usually fully booked and you wouldn’t want to miss the fire performance the locals offer. Relax with you feet on the sand and enjoy the show!Fire Show | Nomaddictives
  6. Zipline through the Tree Tops
One of the most famous attractions in the Efate Island is the Vanuatu Jungle Zipline. It’s a fun and breathtaking experience that will show you the island in a whole new way. See the canopy (above 80 meters high) while you make your way through 6 ziplines and 2 suspension brigdes. Would you dare to ride?
  7. Jump right into the Blue Lagoon
Also one of the most famous attraction in Efate, the Blue Lagoon is just about 20 minutes drive from town. Get your swimmers ready and enjoy the turquoise waters with the locals (they’ll teach you how to jump from the ropes too). A must do while in the Island and perfect spot to chill in the afternoon.

  8. Shop at the Local Markets
When around town, stop at the Markets and buy some exotic fruits to try. The locals grow their own food without chemicals or any pesticides. The produce is so flavoursome! Food is also seasonal and really cheap.

  9. Watch the Sunset at Nambawan Cafe
Our favourite place for breakfast in Efate was the Nambawan Cafe. The delicious coffee and the nice chilled breeze will wake you up slowly and put your in ‘holiday mode’. At night, the cafe transforms into a bar and offers pizzas and beers. Watch the sunset and stay for a movie under the stars.

  10. Explore from the Sea
If you want to explore the island from another perspective, rent a kayak or a stand-up paddle and cruise around these pristine waters. The views all over are spectacular and you’ll enjoy getting some exercise after so much relaxing. Better deals if you rent from the island resorts.
